Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Tuesday, February 16, 5:30 - 7:00 pm
NEW Pancake Parade through Trinity Hall
NEW Shrove Hunt for Kids

The annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, hosted by Duke Lutherans, will take place at 5:30-7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 16 in Trinity Hall. Pancakes, applesauce, dessert, Mardi Gras beads, fun and laughter will be the order of the evening. There will be a free-will offering to support the Duke Lutheran ministry, in particular, the spring break mission trip to San Francisco.

Also, a silent auction of vacation and second homes for use during 2010 will take place at the same time. You will be able to bid for either a weekend or a full week, at one or more of a series of homes made available in order to help raise funds for Duke Lutherans. This is a great opportunity to support Lutheran Ministry at Duke and at the same time get a wonderful place for a vacation for you, your family and friends at an unbeatable price. The specific dates of use will be subject to not less than four weeks notice and must be approved by the owner. For those of you unable to attend on the 16th, you will have the chance to bid on these items on the Sunday before, February 14th. If you own a second or vacation home and would consider making it available for a week or weekend as a silent auction item, please contact Bill Dahl or Amanda Stoen for details on what is involved.
During the pancake supper, there will be a historically based official “Pancake Parade” through Trinity Hall, followed by a “Ceremony of Honor” for pancakes near and far. Pastor Colley will preside at the ceremony.

Children and youth are invited to join the hunt for “shroves.” Small, furry, shroves will be hidden throughout the atrium and fellowship hall. Children will be asked to find and collect as many shroves as they can find, a special prize given to everyone at the end of the hunt. Parents can join the hunt for shroves with their kids!

Fowler Memorial Library

February is National Library Lovers Month and you can show your love for Fowler Memorial Library by making a special library offering on the second Sunday of February (February 14). This offering will comprise the library’s total budget for the year and will be used to purchase new materials and pay for magazine subscriptions.
This month the library’s art wall has a display of photographs of God’s beautiful world in the winter time. Come by the library anytime to view the photographs, read, or just relax in a very restful atmosphere. Thanks for supporting Fowler Memorial Library.

Helping Haiti
On Tuesday, January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti. The quake struck 10 miles from the capital city of Port-au-Prince and has left the city in ruins. Aftershocks continue to bring worry of further damage and more injuries.
Immediate needs are water, food, and shelter. Cash gifts are the most effective way to quickly provide these much needed services to the people of Haiti.
Lutheran World Relief is working with partners on the ground to ensure that the people of Haiti get immediate access to water, food, and shelter. LWR is also committed to the long-term recovery of the people of Haiti. To maximize relief efforts, LWR is also coordinating with a network of 400 staff on the ground through partnerships with Catholic Relief Services, local responding organizations, and other international relief agencies.
LWR also contributed 670 health kits and 1,500 layettes to Church World Service for distribution to people displaced by the earthquake.

How You Can Help
PRAY - for all those affected and those who are there to help
GIVE - by making a donation to the Haiti Earthquake fund, you will help ensure that LWR is able to quickly provide the most effective assistance. LWR accepts donations by phone at 800-LWR-LWR-2, online or by mailing a check or money order to:
          Lutheran World Relief
          Haiti Earthquake
          P. O. Box 17061
          Baltimore, MD 21298-9832
Once immediate needs are met, further gifts will be used to help LWR respond where the need is greatest, in Haiti or elsewhere around the globe.

Provide Health Kits
As the months go by, and Haitians try to get back on their feet, Lutheran World Relief will be working with its partner organizations on the ground to provide services to those left homeless by the earthquake.
Members and friends of St. Paul’s can contribute by assembling kits and bringing them to the designated area in our foyer. If you would like to contribute, here is the way to assembly a health kit.
Include the following items in each health kit:
□ One hand towel, dark color recommended
□ One washcloth, dark color recommended
□ One bath-size bar of soap (4 to 5 oz.), any brand, in its original wrapping
□ One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging
□ One sturdy comb, remove packaging
□ One metal nail file or nail clippers with file attached, remove packaging (do not substitute cardboard emery boards for the file)
□ Six Band-Aids® (or similar brand), preferably ½" to 3/4"; secure together with a rubber band

▸ DO NOT add other items or leave out any of the items listed.
▸ All items should be new and in good condition.
▸ Wrap smaller items in the washcloth; wrap washcloth and remaining items in the towel and tie securely with ribbons or yarn.
▸ Do not enclose the kit or any of its contents in plastic bags.
▸ Do not bring loose items.

Monetary donations to defray shipping costs are also needed. Please write “Health Kits” in the memo section of your check, or on an envelope in which you enclose cash, and place your donation in the offering plate. You can also add “Health Kits” to one of the blank lines on your offering envelopes and designate your offering amount on the line across from it.

Severe Weather Policy
If we are experiencing icy or snowy conditions on Saturday evening or Sunday morning, the Saturday 5:30 pm service and the 8:30 am Worship and 9:45 am Sunday School will be canceled. We will have an 11:00 am Sunday Worship Service unless extreme conditions exist. If this does occur, the 11:00 am worship service cancellation will be announced on TV channels WTVD and WRAL or their websites. We ask that you exercise caution traveling to worship or to meetings, choir rehearsals, etc. If schools are closed, generally, meetings and rehearsals will not take place.

Whole Life Stewardship
Please complete the Time and Talents survey and your pledge cards and return to St. Paul's as soon as you are able.
“Stories to Tell & Gifts to Share” – The Congregation is invited to pick up copies (one per household) of the Stewardship Devotion booklet – “Stories to Tell and Gifts to Share” – faith stories from members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

A detailed 2010 Program for Ministry handout and breakdown of the proposed budget is available in PDF format here. If you have any questions regarding the budget and pledging, please contact the church office, Pastor Colley, or a member of the finance committee.

Welcome to the NEW and improved St. Paul's Lutheran Church!
Read below for instruction on the “what’s” and “where’s”
Please seek out staff if you need information.

▸ Worship is back in the sanctuary!  You may park anywhere! On Sundays, all major doors will be unlocked. During the week, you will find the new main entrance off the Pickett Road side open.
▸ Nursery care is downstairs for Worship times. A beeper system is in place to contact parents from the nursery if needed.
▸ You may enter the downstairs from the double doors under the canopy. This also leads to the elevator and stairway up to the main hallway.

▸ New restrooms in use. Downstairs, the ladies' room is down the hallway left of the main entrance and the men's room is to the right. There is a children's restroom between the two nursery classes.  Upstairs, the main restrooms are across from Trinity Hall, with additional ones located in the library and off the lounge (this one contains a baby changing station). Please note the dual flush system on the toilets.  Signs are posted – help us conserve water!
▸ Offices are located in the hallway across from Trinity Hall. The reception office is located across from the entrance to Creation Garden where the carpet and chairs are in the atrium. The information table is at this doorway.
▸ Mailboxes are in the reception office and the copy machines in the work room behind the reception office.

Welcome! Come and enjoy our new space!

Check out our sanctuary stained glass window!

“From the Heart of Christ” is the title of the new stained glass window which brings light and color into our sanctuary. The new window reflects God’s presence and story in the many images that pour out from the heart of Christ at the center. Mary Magdalene and Paul are represented in the side panels of the Trinitarian window. As you come to worship each week, let the window speak to you. See something new and different each time you gaze upon it. Dwell in the beauty of simple colored glass arranged to reflect the wonder of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What do you see? What do you hear? What does it mean? Begin a conversation with one another. A detailed brochure about the stained glass window will be available soon. "Let us come before God’s presence with thanksgiving; I will listen to what the Lord God is saying; come, let us worship the Lord."

Nursery News
Would you enjoy being a part of our nursery caregiver ministry on a regular basis? Do you enjoy working the nursery but are unable to commit to serving on a regular basis? We are in need of more caregivers for the 8:30 am and 11am worship services as we move into our new nursery space. We are also in need of nursery substitutes, who would be willing to serve if a caregiver is unable to serve at the last minute. Please contact Rebekah King by email or by phone at 919-475-0514 if you are interested or need information.

During worship services every Saturday night and Sunday morning, our congregation is treated to fresh-cut flowers in two vases on stands behind the altar. While all of us enjoy these flowers during worship, we may not be aware that anyone may donate flowers for a given Sunday, and can do so as often as they wish.  If you would like to donate flowers, you may seek out the "Flower Box" in the foyer area of the church and follow the instructions on it -- it is located by the door to the offices. You may also download the instructions and form here in PDF form and either send it or bring it to the church. You may fax the form and then send in your donation also. If you have any questions regarding the Altar Flowers, please email the church office or call them at 919-489-3214.

All Committee Meeting Night

All Committee Night takes place on the first Tuesday of each month beginning at 7:00 pm. If you would like to participate with a committee, please feel free to come to the All Committee Night. Each and every committee needs additional members to join in, inspire, and inject ideas. Please join us. We meet in Trinity Hall at 7:00 pm for opening prayer and comments, go to individual committee meetings (Communications, Education, Evangelism, Social Ministry, Stewardship, Worship) and reassemble in Trinity hall an hour later for a wrap-up and closing prayer.

The Tongue and Thimble group meets at 10:00 am on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Eden Room downstairs at St. Paul’s. If you have an interest in sewing or needle crafts, please consider coming on Wednesdays. If you have any questions about the group, contact Doris Tilley, Arloa Bittikofer, or Lois Kinzie. Take a look at our photos page and see some of the beautiful quilts they have created in the past. These quilts are presented to local hospitals to be given to children in long-term care situations.

The Chronic Illness and Healing Group meets on the second and fourth Mondays in the month at 1:00-3:00 pm.  If you have any questions about the Chronic Illness group, please contact Chaplain Bill Dahl, or the church office.
