"Come to the Table"

Gathered around the cross, the Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens and makes holy the whole Christian church. Each week in worship, Jesus invites us to come to his table and be fed. The abundant grace overflowing from his table enables us to respond with our whole lives in love for the world and one another.

In the book of Exodus, we hear the story of God raining bread from heaven upon the people of Israel in the wilderness, providing bread, or manna, each day.

We have been called to Come to the Table and share in God’s blessings.

Sponsored by the Stewardship Committee and led by staff and leaders of the congregation, Come to the Table small group gatherings are a time for conversation and preparation for the Program for Ministry for 2011. Every member of the congregation is invited and encouraged to attend a scheduled gathering in the month of September. Please check the meeting schedule and select a time when your family can "Come to  the Table".  There are presently 17 occasions - please pick your best time.

In addition to the gatherings held at St. Paul’s, three member homes will host a table talk meeting: Pastor and Gail Colley, Bill and Barbara Dahl, Chris and Amanda Stoen. Sign up for a home meeting, all other gatherings are open for anyone to attend.  Children are encouraged to attend, child care for nursery age children will be provided for all gatherings. Every member of St. Paul’s is asked to attend one Come to the Table gathering, in preparation for...

The MULCH Is Coming! -- Saturday, September 25!

Saturday, September 25th has been scheduled as the day that we will complete the mulching project that was started in the spring. The remaining areas around the sanctuary and on the western side of the property will be completed on that day.

Snacks, drinks, and of course, LUNCH will be provided, so bring your gloves and tools and plan to be ready to start at 8:00 AM. We had a wonderful, fulfilling morning of hard work and fellowship in the Spring with a great turnout of workers. Let’s see if we can get even more folks on the 25th and have even more fun. See you then!

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Fowler Memorial Library

On Sunday, October 10, St. Paul’s will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fowler Memorial Library. The library was founded by Edwin M. and Margaret Fowler and their daughter, Melba, in 1960 in memory of Edwin’s father, Edwin DeMark Fowler, who had died in January of that year.

Edwin DeMark Fowler, a printer for Durham’s Seeman Printery, was instrumental in the formation of a Lutheran mission in Durham in 1919 and became a charter member of the new St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in 1922, serving on the first church council. He located the property for the first church building at the corner of W. Chapel Hill Street and Vickers Avenue and headed the building committee for that lovely stone church.

When the library was dedicated on October 9, 1960, more than 100 volumes from Mr. Fowler’s personal library formed the core of the collection. Through the years other significant donations were made by Prof. K. B. Patterson, Pastor Henry Shroder and Pastor Harry Robinson. The family of Richard Taylor presented a computer system to the library in his memory in 2009.

In 1968 the library was relocated to a rental space on Broad Street after the first church building was torn down. In the fall of that year the library was able to reopen in the newly built St. Paul’s on the corner of Cornwallis and Pickett Roads. In November 2008 the library moved into the home of the librarian while remodeling was being done at St. Paul’s. A blessing ceremony was held in October 2009 for the remodeled library which is now triple its’ original size.

Be sure to visit Fowler Memorial Library on the weekend of October 9-10. There will be a retro poster and book display that will take you back to 1960 (or further!), give-aways, a contest, and food (one of the few times the librarian will not mind if you eat in the library!).

From the Heart of Christ

Stained Glass Window

Congregational Input and Theological Insights Welcome!

On Sunday, May 23, Pentecost, St. Paul’s Church joyfully and liturgically blessed and sanctified five ecclesiastical art projects. We thank God for them and those who had the vision and resource to provide them.

Our Stained Glass Window, From the Heart of Christ, is one of those projects. As you may have heard over the last 10 months that we have worshiped in our newly renovated sanctuary, a booklet is planned to be published in the fall of 2010 that will serve as a guide to the window and its symbols.

The window tells a story. The window is alive as we worship. It shapes us in faith and mission. For historical and long-term understanding and clarity, this booklet will include detailed descriptions on the window and its images, going into great detail concerning possible interpretations of its beauty and intention.

As part of this booklet, you as a congregation member and worshiper are invited to write about the window, sharing your own experience with it. All are invited to comment in writing: children and their visions, teens and their surprise, adults with spirit-filled insights and theological points of personal interest. These writings will be printed in an ending section of the new booklet. Already we have unsolicited writings in hand from members. There is no guideline to length or theme, simply let the Spirit guide you.

Since all writings have deadlines, let us put forth October 1, 2010 as time when we receive these writings from you. Thank you for your input into our sanctuary’s beauty, understanding, and vision. To quote again from dedication guide: "From vision to blueprint to implementation, the process [of ecclesiastical art] is an opportunity for congregational growth. The journey to understand liturgy, ritual, and art enriches the community and animates the life and faith of the church."

Your writings are welcome. Give yours to any staff member, use e-mail, mail, or hand delivery.

                In Christ, Pastor Colley

Nursery News
Would you enjoy being a part of our nursery caregiver ministry on a regular basis? Do you enjoy working the nursery but are unable to commit to serving on a regular basis? We are in need of more caregivers for the 8:30 am and 11am worship services as we move into our new nursery space. We are also in need of nursery substitutes, who would be willing to serve if a caregiver is unable to serve at the last minute. Please contact Diane Archer or by phone at 919-475-0514 if you are interested or need information.

During worship services every Saturday night and Sunday morning, our congregation is treated to fresh-cut flowers in two vases on stands behind the altar. While all of us enjoy these flowers during worship, we may not be aware that anyone may donate flowers for a given Sunday, and can do so as often as they wish.  If you would like to donate flowers, you may seek out the "Flower Box" in the foyer area of the church and follow the instructions on it -- it is located by the door to the offices. You may also download the instructions and form here in PDF form and either send it or bring it to the church. You may fax the form and then send in your donation also. If you have any questions regarding the Altar Flowers, please email the church office or call 919-489-3214.

All Committee Meeting Night

All Committee Night takes place on the first Tuesday of each month beginning at 7:00 pm. If you would like to participate with a committee, please feel free to come to the All Committee Night. Each and every committee needs additional members to join in, inspire, and inject ideas. Please join us. We meet in Trinity Hall at 7:00 pm for opening prayer and comments, go to individual committee meetings (Communications, Education, Evangelism, Social Ministry, Stewardship, Worship) and reassemble in Trinity hall an hour later for a wrap-up and closing prayer.

The Tongue and Thimble group meets at 10:00 am on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Eden Room downstairs at St. Paul’s. If you have an interest in sewing or needle crafts, please consider coming on Wednesdays. If you have any questions about the group, contact Doris Tilley, Arloa Bittikofer, or Lois Kinzie. Take a look at our photos page and see some of the beautiful quilts they have created in the past. These quilts are presented to local hospitals to be given to children in long-term care situations.

The Chronic Illness and Healing Group meets on the second and fourth Mondays in the month at 1:00-3:00 pm.  If you have any questions about the Chronic Illness group, please contact Bill Dahl, or the church office.
